Social Awareness Week

This week (12th of December to the 16th of December) as part of our social awareness week TY students ran a food appeal for St. Vincent De Paul.    They went around to every class first thing in the morning and collected food from students. Once the students had brought in food their name was entered into a competition to win a selection box.  Almost every student brought in some food.  The TY students collected several boxes of food to donate to St. Vincent De Paul.  On Thursday Colin Smyth a TY student made an announcement over the intercom to remind everybody about social awareness week and also to remind students to bring in food.  On Friday at break time TY students had a surprise for the whole school including the teachers.  They decided to do the mannequin challenge which is a famous video on social media.  This was to raise social awareness about social media.  After the mannequin challenge people from St. Vincent De Paul came and collected the food.  Overall our social awareness week ran very successfully in our school.

Healthy Living Week 2016

Healthy Living Week 2016 from Robert O’Reilly on Vimeo.

Healthy Living Week is a themed event that staff and students look forward to every year. This year a variety of events ran throughout the week to promote the area of health and wellbeing. Health and nutrition activities occurred in Home Economics lessons, students also cooked healthy breakfasts, made their own fruit smoothies and cooked gluten free dishes on one of the days to mark Coeliac Awareness Week which was a nationwide event occurring on the same week. Students examined cereal labels and there was plenty of discussion on the fibre and sugar contents of various cereals. The English Department ran a poetry and essay competition the theme being ‘Healthy Living’, Science classes focused on the area of digestion and dissection of hearts. In RE class students created mood boards titled ‘What makes me happy?’  and there was lots of physical activities and fun lunch time games. Tug of War, Volleyball, A Crossbar challenge with Mr Nolan, laughing yoga and fun circuit classes with Michelle Fanning were just some of the activities that were enjoyed by all. At break time Ms. Cooney gave out free smoothies, flapjacks, fruit and protein power balls to encourage healthy snacks containing fibre and fruit.  Mr Cunnane and Mr O Reilly participated in a cook off to show off their culinary creativity. A big thank you to the staff, student council members and TY students who helped Ms Cooney out with the various events.

Science Gallery FIELD TEST Exhibition

‘Our ability to produce food and products for growing populations on a finite amount of land with limited resources is unquestionably one of the great challenges we face globally. It may not be foremost in our minds when we do our weekly food shop but the decisions we make as consumers and digesters can be critical influencers in the way these challenges play out’ (Science Gallery)

As part of the Development Education module in school TY’s visited the Science Gallery in Trinity College to check out the exhibition that is currently running. The exhibition was very interactive and thought provoking in relation to the area of radical adventures in future farming. Sustainability, biodiversity what type of plants and animals we grow in the future, the use of mycotecture bricks in building (bricks grown from fungi like mushrooms), bee protection, home grown in vetro meat, city farms, insects as an alternative protein food source were all some of the topics discussed during our visit. Our focus this year in school was to look more at the idea of food sustainability both locally and globally and also food security through development education classes so this exhibition helped consolidate the ideas discussed in class.
