Physical Education

Physical Education is mandatory for all students attending Ballinamore Community School.

The school offers the following programmes to students:

  • Junior Cycle PE Short Course: The short course in physical education was introduced in September 2017. Our current 1st and 2nd Year students are participating in this course. The course aims to develop our students as knowledgeable, skillful and creative participants who are confident and competent to perform in a range of physical activities safely. The course also aims to build students’ appreciation of the importance of health-enhancing and inclusive physical activity and a commitment to it now, and in the future. Students are required to actively participate in the following strands:
    • Physical Activity for Health and Wellbeing
    • Games
    • Individual and Team Challenges
    • Dance and Gymnastics

 

  • Junior Cycle PE: Our 3rd year students are participating in the JCPE course. This involves active participation in the following strands:
    • Adventure activities
    • Athletics
    • Dance
    • Invasion games
    • Net and fielding games
    • Gymnastics
    • Health-related activity

 

  • TY PE: The GAA Future Leaders Programme was introduced in September 2018. All TY students are currently participating in this programme. They are partaking in 6 modules:
    • Nutrition
    • Sports Journalism
    • Coaching
    • Sports Administration
    • Performance Analysis
    • Refereeing

On completion of these modules and following successful organization and running of a games centre and blitz for 1st Year students, TY students may be awarded with a GAA Future Leaders Award.

TY students also complete the GAA Foundation Level Coaching Certificate and Refereeing Course as part of their participation in TY PE.

Our senior cycle PE programme is based on the six curriculum models which underpin the SCPE framework. These are:

  • Contemporary Issues in Physical Activity
  • Adventure Education
  • Personal and Social Responsibility
  • Teaching Games for Understanding
