As part of the science and society course first year students in Ms. Colum’s science class went to the recycling bank in Ballinamore where they recycled clear glass, brown glass, green glass, drinks cans and clothes.
Ms. Colums first year 1A Science class went to Ballinamore recycling bank as part of their study of science in society and the green schools programme. Students recycled green glass, clear glass, brown glass, cans and clothes.
The Green schools committee with Ms. Colum travelled to Claremorris, Co. Mayo to collect the green flag for travel at the Green Schools award ceremony. Students and staff at Ballinamore had been working on the travel theme with the help of their green school coordinators Ms. Cooney, Mr. Mullen and Ms. Colum. The new theme that Ballinamore Community will be working on is Biodiversity.
As part of healthy living week Ms. Colums first year science students who planted lettuce, onions and radishes in the polytunnel reaped the rewards as they were able to harvest their lettuce, onions and radishes and bring them home for tea.
The Transition Year students with Ms. Colum and Kay Maguire from Ballinamore Tidy Towns got involved in Community Gardening at St. Felims in Ballinamore. Students tidied up the window boxes and added new compost and new plants to window boxes.
After waiting three weeks
our chickens hatched out and were delighted to meet the students at Ballinamore Community School.
The Transition Year students with Ms. Colum and Kay Maguire from Ballinamore Tidy Towns carried out some community gardening at St. Felims. The students removed the weeds from the window boxes and refilled them with compost. They also tidied up the garden area.
The first year science students transplanted cabbage, spinach, lettuce, onions, carrots and other vegetables that they had grown from seed in the polytunnel.
The Leaving Certificate Agricultural Science students went on a field trip to a local grassland habitat where they examined biotic, abiotic and edaphic factors as part of their agricultural science practical coursework.
Science and Agricultural Science students got involved in growing vegetables in the polytunnel. All the produce will be harvested as part of our harvest feast in September.
