All Ireland Playoffs – Please support!

Wishing the best of luck to our first year girls basketball team who are playing in the All-Ireland playoffs tomorrow. There are 16 teams left in the competition, with 4 pools of 4. One team will qualify for the All-Ireland semifinal from each pool. We are hosting one of the pools and our girls will play three other teams in Ballinamore Sports Complex tomorrow. We play St Louis, Carrickmacross at 9.30am; Rathdown CS at 1.45pm; and Pres Wexford at 4.40pm. Please come along and support our girls.
Congrats Eimhin, Connacht PPS Colleges All Star, 2017
Congratulations to Eimhin Quinn, 5th year and Aughawillan Ladies GFC on the wonderful achievement of being chosen to represent Connacht PPS in the recent Inter – Provincials, played in January, 2017. Eimhin played in all 4 matches and played with distinction. Well done.
Ballinamore CS First Year Girls Win Blitz in Style, Wednesday 26th April, 2017

Ballinamore CS hosted a 13 aside Blitz in Sean O Heslin’s pitch on Wednesday, 26th April 2017. 3 teams attended, namely Ballinamore CS, Carrick CS and Drumshanbo VS. Each team played 2 group games at 30 mins a game, with the top two teams into the final.
In Ballinamore’s first game vs Carrick CS goals were what won it for Ballinamore in a very tight tussle on a score line of 7:3 to 4:5. In Ballinamore’s second game they played Drumshanbo VS and found themselves down by 6 pts at half time only to claw back the defecit and win on a final score of 6:5 to 2:8.
In the other group game, Carrick CS beat Drumshanbo VS setting up a Ballinamore vs Carrick final. In a very tight final which was a draw at ht on 2:1 each, Ballinamore defence rode out the storm of Carrick attacks and goals from Ella Galligan Maguire (2:2), Leah Smyth (2:0) and scores from Síomha Quinn (0:3) and Caoimhe Mc Dermott (0:1) saw Ballinamore ending up as victors on a final score of 4:6 to 2:4. Well done to all the panel on a great victory. Thanks to Drumshanbo VS, Carrick CS, Sean O Heslin’s for use of the pitch and referee, James Holohan for all making the day a success.

History Trip to Strokestown House and Famine Museum
On Tuesday 4th April the Transition year class and the Third year History class visited Strokestown House and Famine Museum.
The trip coincided with life in Rural Ireland before and after the Famine for third years, while the Transition year class were completing a school project on the lives of the Pakenham-Mahon family,who once lived there.
We got a very informative guided tour of the Famine Museum as well as Strokestown House, which gave students a flavour of life from the tenant’s as well as the landlord’s perspectives.
Following lunch, we had a walk around the splendid Gardens and Woodland areas, also part of the Estate before returning back to school.
Students found the trip useful and enjoyable and relevant to their studies.

French Students from Lycée De Ressins visit Ballinamore
Wednesday 22nd March: 26 French students accompanied by Ms Severine Briday and Ms Dominique Frankwoski arrive in Ballinamore Community school. They are reunited with their Irish pen pals are settle into their Irish homes.
Thursday 23rd March; after is an official welcome by our Principal Mr Leyden. A tour of our school follows this. At 10am the French students attend Ms Earley’s class to prepare for their English language activity in Ballinamore. In the afternoon, we have French conversation with our 5th and 6th year students.
Friday 24th March: 9am – 11am there is a French Irish quiz followed by 3 classes of cooking with Ms Cooney. The French students make home-made lemonade, fresh scones and chocolate and strawberry twirls. Ms Severine Briday and Mr Cunnane visit Ms O’Dell and Ms Bohan’s classes in the National School.
The weekend: throughout the weekend the French Students are entertained with visits to The Boda Borg in Lough Key, some go Cannoning, others visit Pol an Eas, Aughnasheelin etc.
Monday 27th March: the French students visit Sligo, with beautiful sunshine they walk on the beach at Strand hill, climb the sand dunes and have coffee in a local Café. Later they visit Sligo town.
Tuesday 28th March. Ms Stenson organised sports in the morning, the French try their hand at hurling and Pella. After coffee break the French students attend classes. Geography, Irish, French, History and Woodwork.
After lunch, thanks to Ms Ni Mháille, the French were taught some Irish dancing. Later, Ms Madden held a prayer service for the 52 students involved in the exchange.
Wednesday 29th March: at 8am we waved goodbye to our French Friends as they departed for home.
French exchange to Ressins 2017
Monday 6th March: 26 students along with Ms Earley and Mr Cunnane travelled to Ressins in France to begin our annual School exchange. We arrived in Lyon Airport and were met by our French teachers Ms Severine Briday and Ms Dominique Frankwoski. We arrived at the school at 6pm where we were welcomed and introduced to the 26 French Students who would travel to Ireland on the 22nd of March.
After we settled into our dorms, we had dinner in the school canteen. Following dinner, we played games in the Foyer before going to bed.
Tuesday 7th March: early start at Ressins, we were up and showered before 7am as breakfast is served at 7:30. Classes begin at 8am and last 1 hour. We met our French pen pals and were given a tour of the school which includes a working farm. After a short break, we had an orienteering activity. Lunch begins at 12 noon and lasts 2 hours. After lunch, we went to classes and prepared for our trip to Lyon the next day. Today’s classes involved working with our French Pen Pal and speaking in French. We also visited German and Spanish classes. Dinner takes place at 6pm. Afterwards we went to the Foyer (a place where the student hang out; watch films, play games, or listen to music). We also had to complete our nightly French homework that Ms Earley had set for us.
Wednesday 8th March. We travelled to Lyon. Where we visited the Musée de Confluences at the confluence of the Rhone and Saone Rivers, a modern, interactive and interesting place to visit. Afterwards we had free time to buy our lunch. In the afternoon, we travelled into the centre of Lyon and visited the Old Town, this was followed by some “light” shopping. We returned to Ressins for our dinner at 7pm.
Thursday 8th March: this day was “French Food Day”. In the morning, we participated in History, Geography, French classes. Throughout the experience, we were paired with French students and expected to use the language. In the afternoon, we were split into three groups. Group 1: helped prepare the dinner for the whole school. We had to prepare a starter, main course, and dessert with guidance from Chef Nico. Group 2: cheese tasting. This group researched 7 different types of French Cheese as well as tasting them. Group 3: learned about meat production at the school as well as learning the French words for various cuts of meat, how to identify them and how to cook them. Each group rotated and got to emjoy the full experience of French food at Ressins.
Later that night we had a French/Irish party in the Foyer, where we were entertained into the late hours of the morning!!
Friday 9th March: in the morning, we travelled to Charlieu: the local town. Here we visited an old Hospital and Maison de la Praline. We also received a short tour of the town from one of the teachers at Ressins. Before we returned to the school we went to a local café for coffee and to taste the praline (a famous pastry).
In the afternoon, we had sports in the school followed by us packing our bags and heading home to our French families for the weekend.
Over the weekend some of us went shopping, played sport, went to football games, went horse riding, and ate loads and loads of French food.
Sunday 11th March: we returned to school at 7pm and settled back into our dorms for our last night and to prepare for our early start in the morning.
Monday 12th March: we had to be up showered and ready for breakfast at 6am as we depart Ressins for our journey home at 7am. We took a TGV from Lyon to Paris and flew home arriving back in Ballinamore at 9pm.
We had a long but enjoyable week in Ressins, we experienced food, language, music, singing, education but above all else we experienced friendship. We made very good friends and can’t wait for them to arrive in Ireland on the 22nd March.

Community School Parents Association regular bimonthly meeting will take place in the school this Tuesday 4th April at 8pm.
