Ladies Football Update

All 3 teams in school have started their competitions.

Senior C

Our girls were unlucky to lose their first match to St Nathy’s, Ballaghadereen away on 25/09/2018. Leading by 4 points at half time the home side came back strong and dedpite a well taken last minute penalty by captain, Katie Mc Nulty we were on the losing end of a 4:7 to 3:13 defeat.

Scorers: Katie Mc Nulty 1:4, Siomha Quinn 1:1 , Lisa Cull 2:0, Emma Gill 0:2

In our next Senior match we played St Clarr’s, Manorhamilton in St Felim’s in a must win game.

Playing against the wind in the first half we defended superbly and found ourselves 6 points down at half time playing against a strong wind.

With a strong wind in our backs Ballinamore settled quickly but it was only in the last 10 minutes that we pulled clear to win on a rather flattering score line of 5:19 to 5:6. It must be mentioned that St Clares were short a few players and were not helped by losing Leah Fox to injury in the first half which weakened their chances. All in all it was a good day at the office and put our season back on track.

Scorers:

Megan Mc Govern 1:1, Katie Mc Nulty 0:7, Siomha Quinn 1:2, Jane Gilheaney 0:1, Lisa Cull 2:3, Emma Gill 1:3,  Becky O Brien 0:2

Our final group game is away to Coola CS, where a win is needed to keep our interest in the competition. A win would guarantee at least a play off in the group.

Junior Ladies

Our Junior Ladies have played 2 matches to date. In our first game we played St Mary’s, Ballina in St Felims. We got off to a great start and kept the momentum going until the final whistle. Final Score: 7:14 to 3:5

Scorers: Molly Murphy 0:2, Megan Mc Govern 1:1, Siomha Quinn 3:5, Caoimhe Prior 1:2, Niamh Donohue 0:1, Ella Quinn 1:0, Caoimhe Mc Dermott 1:1, Grainne Reynolds 0:1.

Captain: Grainne Prior

Our second game was played against Carrick CS on 11/10/2018 in Park Tom, Carrick.

Given the great rivalry between the two teams Ballinamore CS faced a tough task playing a Carrick CS team who had won Connacht U14B 2 years ago and who also knocked Ballinamore out in a play off last year by 6 points, also in Junior B.

The exchanges were close in the first half and 2 fortuitous Ballinamore goals along with some fine scores saw Ballinamore lead by 3:5 to 0:6 playing against the wind.

Despite having the wind in the second half Ballinamore had to work very hard to grind out a victory and only for some good score taking and resolute defending and goalkeeping was victory secured for Ballinamore.

Final score: 5:12 to 1:10

Scorers: Siomha Quinn 2:3, Megan Mc Govern 0:2, Luly Byrne 2:3, Caoimhe Mc Dermott 0:1, Niamh Donohue 0:2, Leah Smyth 1:1

Next game is on Tuesday 23rd October vs St Claire’s, Manorhamilton where the winner will top the group and face the runner up in the other group in the semi final of Junior B.

U14 C

This year we find ourselves in an all Leitrim group comprising 5 teams; Mohill CS, Carrigallen VS, Lough Allen College, St Claire’s, Manorhamilton and Ballinamore CS.

We played our first match vs Lough Allen College away on 2/10/2018.

In a very entertaining game the lead exchanged hands on many occasions until the final 12 minutes where Lough Allen finished strongly scoring 4:2 without reply.

Indeed Ballinamore were leading by a point until the late onslaught from a strong Drumkeeran team.

Ballinamore played very well for long periods in the game and have plenty to build on for their next game vs Mohill CS which will take place on Friday 19th October at 10am in St Felim’s.

Finsl Score: Lough Allen College 9:2 Ballinamore CS 4:5

Captain: Anya Stringer

Scorers: Aisling Redican 2:1, Laura Maguire 0:1, Ellie Mahon 0:1, Tara Galligan Maguire 1:1, Kelly Beirne 0:1, Claire Mc Weeney 1:0

Congratulations Eimhín

Congratulations  to Eimhín Quinn, 6th year student on being chosen to play for the Connacht Ladies Inter-Provincial team for 2018. This is the second consecutive year Eimhín has been chosen and reflects her progress and performances for school, club and County to date.

Eimhín has represented her school with distinction throughout her 6 years and has received a Player of the year award as well as winning a Connacht Junior B medal in 2014  and All Ireland Runner-up medal in the same competition.

To crown all her achievements, Eimhín has been elected Captain of the Connacht team for this year’s Inter-provincials, which will be played in January 2018. This is a merited honour and recognizes the leadership and the conviction with which Eimhín approaches her sport.

Well done on this marvelous achievement from all at Ballinamore CS. More details to follow.

Ballinamore CS First Year Girls Win Blitz in Style, Wednesday 26th April, 2017

Ballinamore CS hosted a 13 aside Blitz in Sean O Heslin’s pitch on Wednesday, 26th April 2017. 3 teams attended, namely Ballinamore CS, Carrick CS and Drumshanbo VS. Each team played 2 group games at 30 mins a game, with the top two teams into the final.

In Ballinamore’s first game vs Carrick CS goals were what won it for Ballinamore in a very tight tussle on a score line of 7:3 to 4:5. In Ballinamore’s second game they played Drumshanbo VS and found themselves down by 6 pts at half time only to claw back the defecit and win on a final score of  6:5 to 2:8.

In the other group game, Carrick CS beat Drumshanbo VS setting up a Ballinamore vs Carrick final. In a very tight final which was a draw at ht on 2:1 each, Ballinamore defence rode out the storm of Carrick attacks and goals from Ella Galligan Maguire (2:2), Leah Smyth (2:0) and scores from Síomha Quinn (0:3) and Caoimhe Mc Dermott (0:1) saw Ballinamore ending up as victors on a final score of 4:6 to 2:4. Well done to all the panel on a great victory. Thanks to Drumshanbo VS, Carrick CS, Sean O Heslin’s for use of the pitch and referee, James Holohan for all making the day a success.

History Trip to Strokestown House and Famine Museum

On Tuesday 4th April the Transition year class and the Third year History class visited Strokestown House and Famine Museum.

The trip coincided with life in Rural Ireland before and after the Famine for third years, while the Transition year class were completing a school project on the lives of the Pakenham-Mahon family, who once lived there.

We got a very informative guided tour of the Famine Museum as well as Strokestown House, which gave students a flavour of life from the tenant’s as well as the landlord’s perspectives.

Following lunch, we had a walk around the splendid Gardens and Woodland areas, also part of the Estate before returning back to school.

Students found the trip useful and enjoyable and relevant to their studies.

Congratulations Eimhin

  • Huge congratulations to Eimhin Quinn, Aughawillan and 5th year student in our school who was recently selected at corner back ( No. 2 ) on the Connacht Ladies PPS team. This is a great honour for Eimhin, for her club, family and school. Eimhin played in all 4 matches and recorded very solid performances throughout. Connacht were unlucky to go down to Ulster in the Cup final. Eimhin follows in the footsteps of Laura O Dowd, who was the only other student from our school to be chosen for this team in 2011 at midfield.

Well done from all teachers, students and team mates. !!!!!!

Ladies Football Update

Senior Girls

Our Senior girls had a very competitive campaign in Senior C but once again success eluded us. We played 4 games in total, winning 1 and drawing one which wasnt enough to qualify out of the group,

We drew our first game with St. Nathy’s Ballaghadereen on a score line of 3:9 each, with a late free from Katie Mc Nulty earning us a draw in a game we should have wrapped up a lot earlier.

In our second game we lost to Carrick CS by 5:8 to 2:8. We were short a few regulars on the day and with a full compliment the result could have been different. Monday morning and post championship celebration blues played a role.

In our next game we played our best football of the year and beat Ursuline, Sligo by 9:10 to 1:9 in St. Felim’s. 4:4 from full forward Emma Mc Govern been the highlight of the game.

This left us needing to win our last game vs Abbey CS, Boyle to qualify or at least get a play off. In a rollercoaster affair that saw us come back from 9 points down to go ahead by a point late on, we unfortunately conceded a late goal which put Abbey back in front a\nd despite a later point and a goal mouth scramble we lost by a point, bringing the Senior season to an end.

Mr Mullen would like to thank all the girls for their commitment over the year.

Captain: Weronika Wresniewska

Vice Captains: Emma Mc Govern and Niamh Mc Niffe

Junior Ladies

Our Junior girls found themselves in a very tough group for Connacht Junior B, having 6 games with the top two straight into the final.

We got our campaign off to a solid start with a 5:15 to 2:5 win over St. Mary’s, Ballina in St. Felim’s.We followed this up with victories over  St. Joseph’s, Castlebar and a 4:21 to 3:2 victory over Ardscoil Mhuire, Ballinasloe. With Swinford pulling out of the competition we had two matches remaining against Carrick CS and St. Brigid’s, Tuam, both of whom were unbeaten upto this.

We played Tuam, just before Christmas and a combination of a long journey and a very strong Tuam side saw us lose by 4:20 to 1:4. We did draw the second half but it was a serious wake up call.

This left our last game vs Carrick CS effectively a semi final. Played in St. Felim’s on 24th January we lost by 8 points in a ding dong battle. Carrick started very well and only for resolute defending we could have been more than the 9 points that we were behind at the short whistle. Conceding a goal at the start of the second half left us 12 points behind but what followed was probably our best 20 minutes of football all year. We clawed the defecit back to 3 points and missed a couple of easy scores which could have narrowed it even further. However Carrick rallied with a few late scores and a goal at the end which put a slight gloss on the score. Carrick CS no doubt were the better team and deserved their victory, albeit they were pushed to the end by a battling performance by Ballinamore CS girls.

That brought an eventful Junior year to an end and to finish 3rd from 7 teams in the second highest competition in Connacht is a fine achievement.

Mr. Mullen would like to thank all the girls for their huge effort all year. Best wishes and a quick recovery to Shonagh O Sullivan and Lisa Cull who missed the last game with injury. Also a quick recovery to our exceptional goalkeeper, Megan Taylor who injured her knee in the process of making a wonderful save in the game vs Carrick. We hope to see all 3 back playing bigger and better next year.

Vice Captain: Ciara Mc Goldrick

U14 Ladies

Following our great victory in the U14C final last year we found ourselves playing in U14b for 2016/2017.

In a very tight group we played 3 matches and accounted very well for ourselves but not recording any wins. In our first game vs St Clare’s, Manorhamilton in St. Felim’s we lost narrowly on a score line of 1:12 to 5:6.

In our second game away to Carrick CS wew made a good account of ourselves but lost on a scoreline of 3:8 to 0:6.

In our final game we played Ursuline, Sligo in very windy conditions in Sligo. We lost by 5:7 to 1:2 after a very close first half and it been the last game of the year all subs were used.

We look forward to next years competition and hope to improve on a very steady tear in 2016/2017.

Mr. Mullen would like to thank all the girls for their efforts over the year.

Ladies Football Latest Results

Our girls teams have had a busy start to the new school year with all three school teams seeing action.

Senior

Our Senior girls have played two matches. They had a hard earned draw vs St. Nathy’s Ballaghaderreen in our first match away from home

Result: 3:9 to 3:9

Our second game game vs Carrick CS in St. Felim’s saw us go down by 9 points in a tough open game of football where the score didn’t reflect how close the game was but the best team on the day won.

Score: 2:8 to 5:8

That leaves us needing to win our last two games vs Ursuline, Sligo on Monday 17th October in St. Felim’s and our final game vs Abbey CS, Boyle. This is quite possible if we have a full panel to pick from and that would see us qualify from the group, most likely but depends on other results.

Junior

Our junior girls have had two games to date and they recorded victories in both matches.

We played St. Joseph’s, Castlebar in St. Felim’s and beat them.

Score: 6:16 to 5:5

In our second game, though short a few starting players, we beat St. Mary’s , Ballina in St. Felim’s

Score: 5:15 to 2:5

We have 4 games left to play and the top 2 meet in a final. Our next game is a difficult away match vs St. Brigid’s, Tuam.

U14

Having won U14C last year our girls are playing in a higher division, this year. In our first game we played St. Clare’s, Manorhamilton in St. Felims and after a great tussle were unlucky to lose by 5 points. While St. Claire’s deserved the win our girls gave a great account of themselves.

Score: 2:8 to 5:8

We have 2 matches left vs Carrick CS and Ursuline, Sligo in our group. If we win both we will qualify from the group. Either way the girls will have blitzes ( 1st years) and challenges over the school year.

Congrats to Michael Bohan(past pupil) and Seamus Mullen( teacher) on winning the West County Hotel Cup with Longford Ladies in  Croke Park on Sunday 25th September, 2016. Michael kindly brought the cup into school on friday 30th September and visited the staff room and some classes. Below are some pics of the visit. More to follow. Well done from all at Ballinamore CS! !!

Senior C Ladies snatch a draw in opener vs St. Nathy’s, Ballaghaderreen

A pressure free by Katie Mc Nulty, in the 5th minute of injury time earned Ballinamore CS a draw in there season opener in Ballaghaderreen school pitch on Tuesday, 20th September.

Ballinamore had the advantage of a strong wind in the first half and went in 3 points ahead at half time, playing very good open football.

In the second half St. Nathy’s whittled away at the lead and despite very strong defending from Ballinamore, the opposition got a late point 3 minutes into injury time. One last surge by Ballinamore saw a foul on Emma Mc Govern which Katie Mc Nulty cooly converted to cap off a superb performance.

Ballinamore now face Carrick CS in their second of 4 group games in 2 weeks time. In a game Ballinamore should have won on their missed chances alone, we did well to etch out a draw in a tough, competitive opener.

Final score: 3:9 to 3:9

Scorers:

Eimhin Quinn 1:0

Maeve Hamill 1:0

Emma Mc Govern 0:3

Megan Cull 1:2

Katie Mc Nulty 0:4
