Croagh Patrick Pilgrimage for 5th yr Students

On Wednesday, 34 students from 5th yr journeyed to Croagh Patrick in Co. Mayo. With lots of energy and enthusiasm students began their climb to the summit. Each student was asked to take a stone, a symbol of their pilgrimage and exchange it with another at the top. One group began to set a fast pace and it wasn’t long before everyone broke into groups and climbed as they were able.

The weather climbing to the summit was fine and dry. Unfortunately by the time most reached the top, a think mist had descended on the mountain. Cold conditions at the top meant most had to return down before the last of the group reached the top.

On the climb down most were hit were with a persistent downpour of wind and rain, which journeyed with them right to the bottom! Amazingly enough there was no complaining, instead students embraced the true spirit of a pilgrimage and they even managed to recite a few songs along the way!

After a quick change of clothes it was on to McDonalds where everyone re-fuelled with burgers, chips and “mcflurries”!

French Teachers Quiz

Two 1st year teams participated in the recent FTA quiz in Carrick. There were teams there from Leitrim, Roscommon, Sligo, Longford and Westmeath. It was a fun night and a chance to hear and speak some French. All the questions were asked in French and everyone received a souvenir of the event. A bonus on the night was meeting David Rawle aka Moone boy and having pictures taken with him.DSCN1065

Healthy Living Week 2014

Healthy Living Week 2014 from Robert O’Reilly on Vimeo.

Now in its fifth year running Healthy Living Week aims to promote the importance of Home Economics as a subject that teaches all about ‘healthy resourceful living’. Some of the topics focused on this year’s themed week included awareness of reducing sugar and salt intakes in our diets and the value of natural yogurt in the diet. Sham Hanifa owner of the Cottage Restaurant visited the school during health week to mentor 5th year student Grainne Griffin prepare for a  competition that she will cook her healthy dish in an all island cook off final on 7th May.

In class students got to make their own homemade yogurt and learnt more about probiotic yogurts, 5th years cooked dishes that were low in salt and many students participated in a fun food facials workshop.  First years cooked used mascarpone cheese (low fat) in cookery class.

Other activities included a ‘friendly’ teacher V student dodge-ball game, penalty shoot out competition and SASTA from Carrick on Shannon also set up a station in the gym for senior students who wanted to check their health status weight and BMI. First year girls participated in a programme with various schools in Leitrim called ‘Girls Active’ organised by Leitrim Sports Partnership during our Health Week.

Part of the our TY presentation at the SVP Youth for Justice project

T.Y students travelled to the Sligo Park Hotel on Thursday 1st May to engage with the exhibition and meet other T.Y students from Leitrim, Sligo, Mayo and Donegal.

The exhibition of School Projects involved our students assembling a display to reflect the work they did on this project .

(They had worked on three different projects over the T.Y year. They held a Social Awareness Week in December, had a Food Collection for SVP and participated in a befriending programme with Rehab Care in Ballinamore)

Over the course of the day other participants came and viewed their stand. They listened to other presentations and had a chance to give a six minute presentation, to all gathered, about the work they did for the project. As the four students began their presentation, they decided to do things a little differently… No one expected them to drop to the ground and feed their presentation through a pre-recorded video display! (It was well received by the audience).
