The leaving cert. history class along with their History Teacher, Mr. Mullen recently paid visits to Kennedy’s Social Museum, Ballinamore and Strokestown House and Famine Museum, Co. Roscommon ( pictured below).
Our Leaving Cert. paid a visit to Strokestown House in Dec. 2009 which included a tour of the former Landlord’s house (dating from 1690), the gardens and the Famine Museum. The tour lasted for about two hours in total and it was a great contrast to see how the landlord class lived around Famine Times and the great suffering of the native Irish on the other hand.
On our visit to the Glenview Social Museum Ballinamore we got an excellent feel for our recent past with a very comprehensive tour guide by Mr. Brian Kennedy, owner of the museum. We got a taste of what rural and town life was like this past 100 years or so. The museum has over 3000 artefacts and is an amazing resource that people have in their local community.
