Mentoring 2017-2018

Our mentoring program for first years is now up and running for 2017-2018. In the first session students and mentors got to know each other and made individual and group collages to represent their interests, hopes and personalities. In the second session they wrote out compliments for all of the students in the school and stuck them on lockers as part of well-being week.

Mentoring Sports Day

The first years and their mentors competed as teams in an afternoon of sports on Wednesday 18th of May. The team who won gold were Claire Smyth, Emily Morgan and Hannah Banks. Silver medals went to Lily Beirne, Senan Harte, Rachel Flynn and Doireann McManus. Finally, bronze medals were awarded to Cailum Canning, Sadhbh Corrigan, Ruth Creamer, Niall Gallagher and Eoghan Baxter. A great afternoon was enjoyed by all. Many thanks to all the fifth year mentors who have given their time and energy to helping the first year students settle into their new school environment. Thanks also to the stewards who helped out in the day

First Year Mentoring

IMAG0567

As our new 1st yr class settles into Ballinamore Community School, ten 5th yr students have volunteered to Mentor them. Each Mentor will work with a group of seven students throughout the year.

The aim of this initiative is to help our 1st yr students to settle-in to a new school life. Each 1st yr is linked with a Mentor, whom they can approach for help or support at any time.

During key times in the year, Mentors will have a series of workshops with the 1st yr students. They will engage in activities to help all 1st yrs to get to know each other and to learn to work as part of a team and develop good communication skills.

This morning was the first workshop between Mentors and our 1st yrs. Mentors initiated a series of activities which reflected good communication and trust. After all the physical activity, each 1st yr was then assigned a Mentor. In small groups they chatted through how school life was going for them and discussed any questions they had. To finish then, each students was rewarded for their efforts with a drink and a little treat!

Mentors’ Christmas Quiz with 1st yrs

All twelve Mentors helped to organise and lead a Christmas Quiz for all our 1st yr students.

Working in their mentoring groups, each team competed together and engaged with all seven rounds. Some of the rounds included the areas of General Knowledge, Knowledge of the School, Sport, and Celebrities. There was even time for a Literacy & Numeracy round.

Well done to the Mentors and all the first years for making it so worthwhile.
