Now in its fifth year running Healthy Living Week aims to promote the importance of Home Economics as a subject that teaches all about ‘healthy resourceful living’. Some of the topics focused on this year’s themed week included awareness of reducing sugar and salt intakes in our diets and the value of natural yogurt in the diet. Sham Hanifa owner of the Cottage Restaurant visited the school during health week to mentor 5th year student Grainne Griffin prepare for a  competition that she will cook her healthy dish in an all island cook off final on 7th May.

In class students got to make their own homemade yogurt and learnt more about probiotic yogurts, 5th years cooked dishes that were low in salt and many students participated in a fun food facials workshop.  First years cooked used mascarpone cheese (low fat) in cookery class.

Other activities included a ‘friendly’ teacher V student dodge-ball game, penalty shoot out competition and SASTA from Carrick on Shannon also set up a station in the gym for senior students who wanted to check their health status weight and BMI. First year girls participated in a programme with various schools in Leitrim called ‘Girls Active’ organised by Leitrim Sports Partnership during our Health Week.
