Ballinamore CS Ladies secure All Ireland Final Place

DSCN0750

On Thursday 27th March in Ballycumber Gaa grounds Ballinamore CS defeated Loreto Clonmel on a score line 7:11 to 2:4. Both teams had recorded good victories in their respective provincial finals; Ballinamore recorded a 11 point victory over Sacred Heart, Westport on 4th February while Clonmel recorded a 12 point victory over St Flannan’s, Ennis on 20 March just a week before this game.

Ballinamore recorded two early wides before a quick Loreto attack saw them breach the Ballinamore defence and record a goal from the lively corner forward Megan Shandan. They followed this up with two more points to see them lead by five points with 7 minutes played. However Ballinamore were getting to grips with the Loreto forwards and with Eilis O Dowd and Roisin mc Hugh forging a strong partnership at midfield they had a platform to launch an increasing number of attacks as the game developed. Aileen Maguire opened Ballinamore’s account with a fine point and this was closely followed by a goal from Carla Le Guen who was now operating at half forward having moved out from the corner forward position. Points by Aileen Maguire, Carla Le Guen and Emma Mc Govern saw Ballinamore  take a two point lead before they were hit with a  sucker punch of a Clonmel goal, scored by no. 11 Lauren Guiry.  However Ballinamore finished the half strongly with a goal By Carla Le Guen to leave Ballinamore ahead by two points on a score of 2:4 to 2:2.

With the aid of the breeze in the second half Ballinamore slowly wore the opposition down with scores from Emma Mc Govern (1:1) who was increasingly starting to trouble the accomplished centre back Orla Burke for Clonmel.  Ballinamore held a 6 point lead halfway through the second half when the decisive score of the game took shape. A long ball into the square was well fielded by Shauna Plunkett(who had moved into the full forward line at the start of the second half)and she was held back as she was about to dispatch a kick, resulting in a penalty. This was expertly dispatched to the keepers left and into the corner by Aileen Maguire. This score saw Ballinamore take  a nine pont lead and further scores from Aileen Maguire (1:1), Emma Mc Govern (0:1) Shauna Plunkett (0:1) and Carla Le Guen(1:2) with just two points in response from Clonmel, saw Ballinamore through with a staggering 22 points to spare. The score line belied how tight the game was and it was only really the last 10 minutes that Ballinamore had the game in the bag and it just wasn’t Clonmel’s day. Ballinamore were very solid throughout the team with the team and scorers as follows.

Shannon O Rourke, Ruth Mc Niffe, Roisin O Toole, Keely Doonan, Eimhin Quinn, Dearbhla Mc Govern, Niamh Mc Niffe, Eilis O Dowd (0:1), Roisin Mc Hugh, Shauna Plunkett (0:1), Emma Mc Govern (1:3), Carla Le Guen (3:3), Leighanne Flynn, Aileen Maguire (2:4)

TY Manual Handling Course

On Tuesday the 4th of March, local Manual Handling Instructor, Micheal O’ Dell came into the school to give a talk on Health and Safety and Back Care. He gave this talk to the Transition Year students. It was a very interesting and worthwhile talk as the students got to learn all about the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Legislation, Subordinate Legislation and Manual Handing Legislation.
Micheal also did a demonstration with the students on Back Care. Many people have sore backs and this has been caused by not doing things right. Micheal showed the students how exactly to lift a box or heavy container without hurting themselves. The students were glad to find out how to do this as it could be very helpful in the future.

Senior Boys win Connacht Final

A great couple of weeks continued for Ballinamore Community School with today’s Senior victory over Gortnor Abbey, Crossmolina in Ballyhaunis. Playing outstanding football and with the aid of a gale force wind, Manager Kevin Nolan’s team raced to a 1-10 to 0-1 lead at half team -the goal coming after a brilliant move upfield involving a six pass interchange before full forward Luke Murphy blasted to the net. Despite the big interval lead little could be taken for granted given the ferocity of the wind. Much was expected from this highly rated Gortnor Abbey team but it was the Ballinamore boys who rose to the occasion and despite the conditions took the battle into the opposition half. With Man of the Match Mark Plunkett dominating midfield and consistently winning primary possession Ballinamore got the opening point of the half after seven minutes from the boot of Conor Gaffney. This seemed to sap the energy of the Mayo side who despite the aid of the breeze could only add another three points in the entire half with Ballinamore out scoring the opposition six points to three in this half to run out comfortable winners 1-16 to 0-4. This was an tremendous team performance with an outstanding defence adding to eight different scorers and an enviable team work ethic which saw them force numerous turnovers and hasty shooting from the much vaunted opposition. They now look forward to an All Ireland Semi Final meeting with Munster champions Ballyvourney from Cork.
