Girls Active Programme 2012
This year Ballinamore PPS got involved in the ‘Girls Active’ Programme which is organised by the Leitrim Sports Partnership. The programme aims to encourage girls to partake in sport/exercise to keep fit by trying different types of exercise out. All girls from 1st, 2nd and 3rd year took part in activity based exercises during some SPHE class time. Fitness Instructor Michelle Fanning (and former past pupil) showed the girls a variety of exercise forms like aerobics, zumba, yoga and circuits to keep fit in school but also encouraged them to take up some form of activity to keep fit and healthy outside school time. Team sports may not be for everyone so it is important to find a way of keeping fit that you enjoy. As a reward for taking part in the programme during the school year the girls were invited to attend a Girls Active Blitz day out with numerous other schools around Leitrim that also took part in the programme. Everyone enjoyed the day out as students got to meet up with other schools to take part in fun games & exercises while also socialising and making new friends.
Cooking for College 2012
Some Leaving Cert students who did not take Home Economics as a subject took part in a morning cookery course in May. The dishes they made that morning were Chicken stirfry & noodles, Thai green chicken curry & rice, Pasta carbonarra (using their own homemade carbonarra sauce) & to finish Pear and chocolate crumble with cream. The feedback after the class was very positive as the plates were clean after sampling and the dishes were useful to know for when they begin college life.
