Healthy Living Week 2012

To highlight to students and parents the relevance of Home Economics to our daily lives and to help get information across about the importance of looking after our health there was lots of activity for a fun themed healthy living week. Speakers included Siobhan Doran (Dental Hygenist) who gave an excellent workshop to students on the sugar contents of foods/drinks which certainly made them think twice about buying fizzy drinks. Maura Dufficy from Bord Bia gave an excellent cookery demonstration on healthy snacks and meals to make using fresh ingredients. Transition Year students were busy making healthy flapjacks to give out at break. We would like to give a big thank you to Supervalu in Ballinamore who kindly sponsored ingredients for the making of the flapjacks. TY students also went on an outing to The Dock for a talk all about fair-trade produce and took a stroll down to explore all the stalls at The Market Yard where they learnt about the wonderful foods and produce available locally. Activities during the week included volleyball, basketball, penalty competitions, walks along the canal and the much anticipated student V teacher soccer match which saw the students victorious (this time). There was lots of entries for the healthy living poetry competition in English classes. Lots of emphasis was placed on choosing healthy food options and a fun workshop all about foods for healthy glowing skin followed by food facials took place in Home Economics Classes. With statistics relating to obesity, type 2 diabetes and heart related problems all at the forefront in the media all of the events ran during this week highlight to students the importance of taking care of their body and emphasises the importance of choosing Home Economics as a practical and relevant subject to study.
