Transition Year: September – December 2013

Chinese

Transition year students have recently begun a Chinese culture and language module.

Adventure Weekend

On the weekend of the 7TH/8TH September our Transition year students camped on Lough Allen.  This also formed part of their GAISCE requirements.

Social Awareness

Students have begun their social awareness programme.  Sharon Tuhoy from St. Vincent de Paul will visit the school to assist the students in their work.  As a result the students will create an awareness campaign on a “Caring for my neighbor” which they will enter into competition in Sligo at a later date.

Sports

For six weeks in September and October our students participated in various sporting activities organised by Michelle Fanning.

CPR/First Aid training

On the 7th and 8th October our students received training in CPR and First Aid from the Irish Red Cross

GAISCE

Students received a presentation regarding the Presidents Awards.  All of our Transitions Year students are currently involved in the GAISCE awards.

Religious Education

Ms. Madden and our Transition Year students travelled to Knock Shrine on the 4th October. The Student have indicated that they enjoyed this experience as they welcomed the time away from school to focus on themselves and their faith

ECDL – Computer Literacy

A yearlong programme is under way which will result in our students receiving a European Computer Drivers License.

Paired reading

During November and December the students will visit the two local National Schools to assist students with their reading. We would like to thanks Elish O’Dell and Noel McKeon for facilitating this.

Build a Bank: AIB

Students have begun to prepare for their interviews in the hope of securing a position in our school bank which will be in operation in the New Year under the guidance of Mrs. Moran and staff from the AIB in Ballinamore

Science

All of our Transition Year students submitted projects for the Young Scientist Competition. Congratulations to Eoin Sweeney, Grace McBarron and Bronagh McGovern who were successful in their application and will represent the school in the competition in January. All Transition Year students will attend the competition.

Geography

An exploration of the Karst Features associated with the Marble Arch Caves was completed by our Transition Year students when they visited the Caves in October.

Work Experience

Transition Year Students participated in a week of work experience 11th November. Students gained experience by working in Accountants, Supermarkets, National Schools, The County Council, Rehab, just to mention a few. Their next work experience week begins on the 3rd March 2014

Careers Exhibition

Mrs. Garvey accompanied our TY students to the careers exhibition in Galway on the 22nd October. Here students got to meet with representatives from all the colleges in Ireland and some from England. This was a valuable experience as students got to investigate the various options available to them as they consider their future after school

Dental Hygiene Awareness

In September Siobhan Doran a dental hygienist request the help of our TY students in making a video to promote dental hygiene as part of a competition in which she was taking part in. This involved Siobhan visiting the school on a number of occasions and our students travelling to Dublin to shoot the video. Congrats to Siobhan who was recently voted dental hygienist of the year

 A taste of what’s coming up before Christmas

  • Members of the I.C.A will visit the School displaying traditional skills and crafts.
  • Transition Year Students will develop their knitting skills!
  • A visit to the Children’s Ombudsman’s Office to complete a workshop on young people’s rights.
  • A guided tour of Dail Eireann.
  • A visiting speaker from the Family Life Centre.
  • Road Safety Awareness Module
  •  Driving lesson
  • RSA driver simulator will visit the school for two days in December
  • Christmas exams 3rd-5th December.
  • Social Awareness Week
  • Ice Skating and a visit to The Chocolate Factory in Dublin on the 2nd December.
  • Fundraising for St. Vincent De Paul.
