Junior Ladies Report 2011/2012

Ballinamore PPS enjoyed a busy, competitive junior season, playing 5 matches, winning 3 and losing 2 which saw us failing to qualify from our very competitive group. Unfourtunately we were unable to equal the dizzy heights we reached in 2011 when we reached the Junior B final and only for poor shooting we should have added another title.

Our season began with a home victory in St. Felim’s on 30-09-2011 on a scoreline of 9:14 to 0:7. In a very strange game our opponents owned the ball for a good ten minutes but resolute defending gave us the platform for victory and the score line didn’t reflect the opposition true callibre as they went on to match the rest of the teams in the group very well. Still, it was a great start to the year.
Scorers: Aileen Maguire 4:5, Sorcha Flanagan 2:0, Carla le Guen 1:2, Eilis O Dowd 1:2, Aoibheann Flynn 0:1, Aisling O Rourke 0:2.

Our second match saw us make the long trip to Bunniconlon to play St. Mary’s Ballina after we agreed to travel due the lack of pitches and with pressure on to get games played. In hindsight this backfired for us on the day as the journey seedmed to tyre our girls , even though we wewre first out on the pitch. While we didnt get the run of play from the referee on a few occasions we ended up 4:6 to 2:0 behind at half time but there was a strong wind blowing. Ballinamore came really strong in the second half and clawed their way back to within 4 points but ran out of time in a much improved second half. We even conceded a goal at the start of the second half which left us 15 points behind at one stage.
Scorers: Aileen Maguire 3:1, Sorcha Flanagan 1:1, Carla Le Guen 0:1, Amy Mc Loughlin 1:0, Ciara Bohan 0:1.

Our third match saw us play St. Joseph’s, Castlebar in Ballinlough on 15th Nov. 2011. While we were short our transition year pupils we recorded a victory in a very close encounter where we saw ourselves 3 points down half way through the second half. However an injury to Caslebar’s excellent goalkeeper saw them move their star player, their full forward to goals to try and hold onto their 3 point lead. This swung the game in our favour and we added some late goals to record a 10:6 to 5:9 victory but never would a scoreline belie how close this match was. Scorers: Aileen Maguire 5:3, Carla le Guen 2:1, Roisin Mc Hugh 1:0, Sorcha Flanagan 1:1, Eilis O Dowd 1:0. Aisling O Rourke 0:1.

Our fourth match was against St. Nathy’s , Ballaghadreen in St. Felim’s 0n 18th Nov. 2011. In a game we dominated from start to finish we recorded a 11:18 to 0:3 victory. Scorers: Aileen maguire 6:9, Ciara Bohan 3:0, Sorcha Flanagan 0:4, Eilis O Dowd 0:2, aisling O Rourke 0:1, Leighanne flynn 1:1, Niamh Flynn 0:2.

This left us needing to play Sacred Heart, Westport in our last game , needing to win to force a playoff in the group. Played in Charlestown on 22 November we again travelled poorly and were slow to get out of the blocks. We ended up losing on a score line of 4:12 to 2:4, without playing anywhere near our potential. That ended our interest in the competition for this year and Mr.Mullen and Mr. Kavanagh would like to thank all the girls for their efforts. They would also like to thank our Principals, staff and parents for their support at matches. Scorers: Aileen Maguire 2:4.
