TY and Leaving Cert. visit to Omagh Folk Park

On Tuesday 27th March 20 Transition year and 6 Leaving Cert. History visited Omagh , Ulster and American folk Park along with Mr. Mullen and Mr. Kavanagh.

It was very enjoyable and informative with the glorious sunshine adding to the experince for our outdoor tour on the theme of emigration.

Over the course of the three hour round trip we visited the homesteads of a weaver, a landlord ( Campbells ), a rich tenant farmer ( Mellons ) and the home of a landless labourer among others. We aslo explored the ships that emigrants left Ireland from and what the experince of America was like when they first arrived. We viewed the log cabins they built in America and the Conestoga wagons which they used when travelling to settle in new areas of America.

As an added bonus we toured the Titanic exhibition before our emigrants tour started where we learned about the experiences of Irish emigrants and in particular one Mary Mc Govern who survived the sinking and had St. Mogues clay sewed into her dress to avoid drowning.

All in all it was an excellent visit and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
